Following is UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ address to the opening of the seventy-eighth session of the General Assembly, in New York today: Just nine days ago, many of the world’s challenges coalesced in an awful hellscape.  Thousands of people in Derna, Libya, lost their lives in epic, unprecedented flooding. They were victims many times over — victims of years of conflict, victims of climate chaos, victims of leaders, near and far, who failed to find a way to peace.

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres: The Secretary-General condemns the assault today against United Nations peacekeepers serving in the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) by Turkish Cypriot security personnel.  The incident, which resulted in injuries to the peacekeepers and damage to United Nations vehicles, took place inside the buffer zone near Pyla/Pile as UN peacekeepers were preventing unauthorized construction work in the area, in accordance with their mandate.
