Today, the peacekeeping Mission in the Central African Republic, based in Bangui, announced the decision by the Secretariat to repatriate a unit of 60 Tanzanian military personnel, who were deployed at a temporary operating base in the western part of the country. This follows serious allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse against these peacekeepers. The decision comes after a preliminary investigation which found credible evidence that 11 members of the unit had allegedly engaged in sexual exploitation and abuse of four victims.

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres: The Secretary-General strongly condemns today’s attack by an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion followed by direct small arms fire against a patrol of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), seven kilometres from the Mission’s base in Ber, in the Timbuktu region, which resulted in the death of one peacekeeper from Burkina Faso and injury of eight others from the same contingent.

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres: The Secretary-General strongly condemns the recent attack against the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) base, staffed by Ugandan peacekeepers, in Buulo Mareer, Lower Shabelle, Somalia. The Secretary-General conveys his heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed as well as to the Government and people of Uganda.  He wishes a speedy and full recovery to the injured.

UN Headquarters will observe the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers and mark the 75th anniversary of UN Peacekeeping on Thursday, 25 May. In 1948, the historic decision was made to deploy military observers to the Middle East to supervise the implementation of Israel-Arab Armistice Agreements, in what became the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization.

A Ghanaian peacekeeper serving with the United Nations Interim Security Force in Abyei (UNISFA) will receive the 2022 United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award. Captain Cecilia Erzuah, 32, who has served in Abyei since March 2022 as the Commander of the Ghana Engagement Platoon, will receive the award from Secretary-General António Guterres during a ceremony marking the International Day of UN Peacekeepers on Thursday, 25 May 2023.

New York, 1 May 2023 –United Nations Peacekeeping today launched a special photo exhibition at UN Headquarters in New York to honor the service and sacrifice of uniformed and civilian peacekeepers as it marks its 75th anniversary.  The exhibit is part of a year-long global campaign, under the theme Peace Begins with Me, which seeks to demonstrate the powerful impact of UN Peacekeeping and its partners on the lives of millions of people caught up in catastrophic conflict.
