The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres: The Secretary-General strongly condemns today’s attack against a convoy of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) in Bandiagara cercle.  The convoy drove over an improvised explosive device, which killed three Senegalese peacekeepers and severely injured five others.

Following are UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ remarks to the African Union Summit “An Integrated, Prosperous and Peaceful Africa”, in Addis Ababa today: Let me begin by recognizing President Macky Sall for his leadership as Chair over the last year.  President Assoumani, we look forward to working with you as incoming Chairperson.  And I want to commend all of you for uniting around the theme of “An integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa”.

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres: The Secretary-General deeply regrets that, on 5 February, the transitional Government of Mali declared the Director of the Human Rights Division of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) and representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, as persona non grata.

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres: The Secretary-General strongly condemns the attack, on 5 February, against a helicopter of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).  The helicopter came under fire while travelling from Beni to Goma, North Kivu Province, resulting in one South African peacekeeper killed and another severely injured.  The crew managed to land the helicopter in Goma.

New York, 7 December 2022 - Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, thanked South Africa for its strong support to United Nations Peacekeeping and for the service and sacrifice of its military and police personnel deployed under the UN flag. South Africa first provided peacekeepers to the United Nations in 1999 when it joined the UN Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC).
