Stephane Dujarric, Spokesman for the Secretary-General The Secretary-General is deeply concerned about clashes in West Darfur over the weekend.  Escalating inter-communal violence has resulted in scores of deaths and injuries, the displacement of nearly 50,000 people and the destruction of property. He expresses his deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured.

[scroll down for French version] The Secretary-General strongly condemns today’s attacks by allegedCoalition des Patriotes pour le Changement(CPC) combatants on a convoy of theUnited Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) in Grimari, Ouaka prefecture. A peacekeeper from Burundi was killed and two others wounded.  The Secretary-General expresses his deepest condolences to the family of the victim, and to the people and Government of Burundi. He wishes a speedy recovery to the injured peacekeepers.

 [scroll down for French] The Secretary-General strongly condemns today's attack by unidentified armed elements against a convoy of the United Nations Integrated Stabilization Mission for Mali (MINUSMA) in Timbuktu region, which resulted in the death of three Ivorian peacekeepers.    The Secretary-General expresses his deepest condolences to the bereaved families as well as to the people and Government of Côte d'Ivoire.  He wishes speedy and full recovery to the six injured peacekeepers.

Addressing the links between fragility and conflict is an essential component of international peace and security. Fragility and conflict are among the greatest obstacles to implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, the conflict landscape was deteriorating.

(CMLXVIII) of 30 November 2020 and the United Nations Security Council in resolution 2559 (2020) of 22 December 2020, to terminate the mandate of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID).

The Secretary-General takes note of the verdict of 22 December by Lebanon’s Permanent Military Court convicting Mr. Mahmoud Bazzi and sentencing him to 15 years for the kidnapping and killing of two United Nations peacekeepers and causing serious injury to a third peacekeeper in April 1980. The Secretary-General welcomes the determination of the authorities of Lebanon to bring to justice those responsible for serious crimes, including attacks against United Nations personnel. [scroll down for French] As Central Africans prepare to take part in the general elections on 27 December, the Secretary-General calls on all stakeholders to ensure that the polls are conducted in a peaceful, inclusive and credible manner. To that end, he invites all actors to refrain from any action, including violence, hate speech and incitement to violence, that could threaten human lives and undermine the electoral process and national stability.
