Following are UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ remarks to the Security Council Meeting on “Effective Multilateralism Through the Defence of the Principles of the United Nations Charter and the 1970 Declaration on Principles of International Law”, in New York today: Allow me to start my remarks with a few words on Sudan, where the situation continues to worsen.  Since the start of fighting on 15 April, hundreds of people have been killed and thousands injured.

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres: The Secretary-General strongly condemns today’s attack against a convoy of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) in Bandiagara cercle.  The convoy drove over an improvised explosive device, which killed three Senegalese peacekeepers and severely injured five others.

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres: The Secretary-General deeply regrets that, on 5 February, the transitional Government of Mali declared the Director of the Human Rights Division of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) and representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, as persona non grata.

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres: The Secretary-General strongly condemns the attack, on 5 February, against a helicopter of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).  The helicopter came under fire while travelling from Beni to Goma, North Kivu Province, resulting in one South African peacekeeper killed and another severely injured.  The crew managed to land the helicopter in Goma.

Je souhaite la bienvenue à Son Excellence le Premier Ministre Maïga.   Nous avons tous été horrifiés par la récente recrudescence de la violence dans le centre du Mali, en particulier par le meurtre d’au moins 160 civils le week-end dernier dans le village d’Ogossagou, dans la région de Mopti.

The Secretary-General takes note of the announcement made by the Commission électorale nationale indépendante (CENI) of the provisional results of the 30 December presidential elections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). He commends the Congolese people and political actors for the conduct of the presidential, national and provincial legislative elections, which saw a broad and inclusive participation of political parties.
