The Secretary-General has been closely following the situation in the Central African Republic. He takes note of the final results of the first round of legislative elections, as proclaimed by the Constitutional Court on 1 February 2021.
The Secretary-General remains very concerned about recent armed clashes and threats to civilians in the Central African Republic. He deeply regrets the loss of human lives, the deterioration of the humanitarian situation, the forced displacement of over 200,000 persons, and the increased suffering of the population. He strongly condemns the violence, reiterates his call for a global ceasefire in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and urges all parties to immediately cease hostilities. He reiterates that perpetrators of grave violations of human rights and international humanitarian law, as well as serious crimes, including the killing of civilians and United Nations peacekeepers, must be held accountable.
The Secretary-General urges the Central African authorities to initiate a meaningful and inclusive political dialogue with the political opposition and armed groups that have renounced violence to de-escalate tensions and revitalize the peace process.
The Secretary-General reiterates that MINUSCA will maintain a robust posture to implement its mandate, including the protection of civilians. He wishes to reassure the people of the Central African Republic of the steadfast support of the United Nations to their efforts to consolidate peace and democracy in close cooperation with other partners.

Déclaration attribuable au porte-parole du Secrétaire général - sur la République centrafricaine
Le Secrétaire général continue à suivre de près la situation en République centrafricaine. Il prend note des résultats définitifs du premier tour des élections législatives proclamées le 1er février 2021 par la cour constitutionnelle.
Le Secrétaire général reste très préoccupé par les récents affrontements armés et les menaces contre les populations civiles en République centrafricaine. Il regrette profondément les pertes en vies humaines, la détérioration de la situation humanitaire, le déplacement forcé de plus de 200,000 personnes et l’augmentation de la souffrance de la population. Il condamne fermement la violence, réitère son appel à un cessez-le-feu mondial dans le contexte de la pandémie de COVID-19 et exhorte toutes les parties à cesser immédiatement les hostilités. Il réaffirme que les auteurs de graves violations des droits de l’homme et du droit international humanitaire, ainsi que de crimes graves, y compris le meurtre de civils et de Casques bleus des Nations Unies, doivent répondre de leurs actes.
Le Secrétaire général exhorte les autorités centrafricaines à entamer un véritable dialogue politique inclusif avec l’opposition politique et les groupes armés qui ont renoncé à la violence dans le but de désamorcer les tensions et revitaliser le processus de paix.
Le Secrétaire général réitère que la MINUSCA maintiendra une posture robuste dans la mise en œuvre de son mandat, y compris la protection des civils. Il tient à rassurer le peuple centrafricain du soutien indéfectible des Nations Unies dans ses efforts pour consolider la paix et la démocratie, en étroite coopération avec d’autres partenaires.
