On 21 December, at a somber ceremony at Rafik Hariri International Airport , UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Major General Aroldo Lázaro and representatives of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) honoured and bade farewell to Second Warrant Officer John Nartey Angmor, a Ghanaian peacekeeper who passed away in his contingent headquarters in the early hours of 15 December.
Second Warrant Officer Angmor was a dedicated and well-respected peacekeeper working with the Ghanaian Battalion in support of UNIFIL's mandate under Security Council resolution 1701.
Since 1978, when UNIFIL was established, the Mission has lost over 330 peacekeepers under various tragic circumstances. Losing a peacekeeper, a soldier, a colleague, and a friend is the hardest thing for the UNIFIL community, regardless of the circumstances.
All peacekeepers who have and are currently serving with UNIFIL come to Lebanon to help maintain stability and be part of the process that will hopefully one day lead to a permanent peace agreement. John Nartey Angmor was part of this process and he will be remembered for his sacrifice by his family, friends and UNIFIL.
