United Nations peacekeepers must be constantly equipped with more and better tools and skills so they could fully meet their mandates in increasingly risky environments, Hervé Ladsous, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, said at Headquarters today.

Excellencies, Secretary-General, Colleagues, Ladies and gentlemen, I am honoured to be here with you today, and join the Secretary-General as we pay tribute to our peacekeeping colleagues who have shown the last full measure of devotion in the service of peace. In 2012, 111 UN peacekeepers from 40 countries lost their lives in the cause of peace, serving as UN peacekeepers. Military, police and civilian colleagues. Since January of this year, a further 25 have been taken from us. Many died as a result of acts of violence. Others were victims of accidents or illness.

Spokesperson Nesirky: Good afternoon, welcome to the briefing. I am joined today by the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Mr Hervé Ladsous. Welcome back again, Mr Ladsous. He’s here to brief you, of course, on a range of peacekeeping matters and to take your questions. I think we have about half an hour with Mr Ladsous and then after that I have a couple of more items and would be happy to take a couple of questions at that point. We are honoured to have the Foreign Secretary of Pakistan here to preside over this important debate and we thank you for this initiative. Pakistan is the single largest troop contributor to United Nations peacekeeping. Its personnel are working courageously every day under the UN blue flag to bring peace to troubled areas.

Dear Mr. Chairman, distinguished delegates, Let me say what a great pleasure it is to be here with you today and to participate, once again, in this important annual debate. I am very pleased to be joined here by our new Under-Secretary-General for Field Support, Ms. Ameerah Haq, who comes to this position with a deep knowledge of peacekeeping and a strong field orientation.
