Under-Secretary-General Jean-Pierre Lacroix Briefing to the Security Council on the situation in Lebano

Mister President, Members of the Security Council,   As you just heard from Under-Secretary-General DiCarlo, the fragile situation that prevailed since November 2024 has given way to a significant escalation of hostilities. We are gravely concerned that there will be a further worsening of the situation in Lebanon and in the region.   In this dangerous and precarious environment, UNIFIL remains on the ground implementing its mandate as far as the security circumstances allow.   

Inaugural EU-UN Strategic Committee on Peace and Security

The European Union-United Nations Strategic Committee on Peace and Security held its inaugural meeting on 3 March 2026 at United Nations Headquarters in New York. The meeting was co-chaired by Rosemary A. DiCarlo, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations; and Charles Fries, the Deputy Secretary General for Peace, Security and Defence of the European External Action Service (EEAS).

Elsie Initiative Fund opens new call for proposals to advance inclusive peacekeeping

New York – 09 October 2025 – The Elsie Initiative Fund for Uniformed Women in Peace Operations (EIF) today launched its Fourth Programming Round at the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) Headquarters, providing a new opportunity for Member States and UN entities to implement gender-responsive approaches to peacekeeping.

Olukemi Ibikunle of Nigeria wins the 2025 United Nations Trailblazer Award for Women Justice and Corrections Officers

New York, 8 October 2025 – The United Nations Department of Peace Operations has announced that Olukemi Ibikunle, a corrections officer from Nigeria serving with the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), has won the third United Nations Trailblazer Award for Women Justice and Corrections Officers.

The Elsie Initiative Fund announces new funding to improve conditions for uniformed women peacekeepers in South Sudan

The bilingual, as delivered   Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,   Moments ago, I laid a wreath to honour Peacekeepers.   Four thousand four hundred of our precious blue helmets have lost their lives since United Nations peacekeeping was established – seventy-seven years ago today.    In their memory I would like to ask all present in this room to observe a moment of silence.   [PAUSE for silence]   Thank you.  

Peacekeepers in Abyei Win Top United Nations Military, Police Awards

NEW YORK, 27 May — The United Nations has announced the 2024 recipients of the Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award and the Woman Police Officer of the Year Award. Squadron Leader Sharon Mwinsote Syme of Ghana will receive the Military Gender Advocate Award and Chief Superintendent Zainab Gbla of Sierra Leone will receive the Woman Police Officer of the Year Award during a ceremony marking the International Day of UN Peacekeepers on 29 May. The awards will be presented at United Nations Headquarters in New York by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
