The Joint African Union (AU) – United Nations (UN) Task Team on the Operationalisation of Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2719 (2023) establishing the framework for financing of AU-led peace support operations (PSOs) through UN assessed contributions held its second consultative meeting from the 29th to the 31st of July 2024 at the UN Headquarters in New York.

NAQOURA, 02 August 2024 – UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix today concluded the Lebanon leg of his trip to the Middle East, during which he strongly stressed the need for de-escalation and return to a cessation of hostilities. In meetings with senior Lebanese officials earlier in the week, Mr. Lacroix highlighted the risk of a wider conflagration and called for maximum restraint and a cessation of the ongoing intensified exchanges of fire across the Blue Line.

Kinshasa, 25 June 2024 — The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) today closed its Bukavu office, the nerve centre of its South Kivu operations for more than 20 years with a high-level event. On 30 June, as agreed with the Government of the DRC, the Mission will complete its withdrawal from South Kivu marking the end of the first phase of its disengagement from the country.

UN Headquarters will observe the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers on Thursday, 30 May 2024. In 1948, the historic decision was made to deploy military observers to the Middle East to supervise the implementation of Israel-Arab Armistice Agreements, in what became the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization. Since that time, more than two million peacekeepers from 125 countries have since served in 71 operations around the world. Today, some 76,000 women and men are serving in 11 conflict zones across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

An Indian military peacekeeper serving with the United Nations Organization Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) will receive the 2023 United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award. Major Radhika Sen served in the East of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) from March 2023 to April 2024 as the Commander of MONUSCO’s Engagement Platoon for the Indian Rapid Deployment Battalion (INDRDB).

New York – The United Nations Department of Peace Operations has announced that Major Ahlem Douzi, who serves as a justice officer with the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) will receive the second United Nations Trailblazer Award for Women Justice and Corrections Officers.

Ninety-one Member States and three international organizations expressed their collective commitment and political support to United Nations Peacekeeping at the 2023 Ministerial, which concluded in Accra, Ghana today. At the first Peacekeeping Ministerial held in Africa, 57 Member States announced new pledges to meet current and future challenges and needs, in line with ongoing reform under Action for Peacekeeping and A4P+, key priorities to improve peacekeeping effectiveness.
