MINURSO’S PEACEKEEPERS: NATIONAL DAY OF  INDIA

On 15 August, MINURSO marked India’s National Day by raising the Indian flag at its headquarters in Laayoune.

This day holds great significance in India’s history, commemorating the end of almost 200 years of British colonial rule. It is celebrated with flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural events, and activities held across public and private institutions.

India ranks among the top contributors to UN peacekeeping. Since 1948, over 200,000 Indian peacekeepers have served in UN missions. As of 31 May 2025, 5,393 Indian personnel are deployed worldwide, including two UNMOs with MINURSO.

The Indian flag consists of three horizontal strips: the Saffron color at the top stands for strength and courage of the country. The white strip in the middle indicates peace and truth. The green strip at the bottom represents fertility, growth and auspiciousness of the land.
