MINURSO’S PEACEKEEPERS: NATIONAL DAY OF PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA

On 1 October 2023, MINURSO raised the flag of the People’s Republic of China at the Mission HQ in Laayoune to mark the country’s National Day.

The Day commemorates Mao Zedong's formal proclamation of the establishment of the People's Republic of China on the 1 October 1949.

China holds a permanent seat at the Security Council and its first military observers were deployed in 1990. In the early 2000s China started deploying lager numbers of uniformed personnel, including specialized capabilities such as formed police units, engineers, and field hospitals.

Nowadays, China is the second biggest financial contributor to the UN peace operations budget, and one of the top ten Troop Contributing Countries (TCC) to UN Peacekeeping with 2277 peacekeepers including 11 within MINURSO.

The red background of the Chinese flag symbolizes the Chinese Communist Revolution. The five stars and their relationship represents the unity of Chinese people.
