MINURSO’S PEACEKEEPERS: NATIONAL DAY OF GUINEA

On 2 October, MINURSO raised at its HQ n Laayoune the flag of Guinea to commemorate the country’s National Day.

Guinea is a major contributor of troops to UN peacekeeping operations with more than 700 military and police personnel deployed. Over 600 of them serve as part of one of the United Nation's most challenging operations - MINUSMA (UN Stabilization Mission in Mali). In Mali, Guinea’s blue helmets risk their lives carrying out a vital demining task. In June 2022, one Guinean peacekeeper was killed by an improvised explosive device during a mine detection operation. [link to https://news.un.org/en/story/2022/06/1120782]

In MINURSO, Guinea contributes with four military observers of whom one assumes the responsibility of Force Chief of Staff at Mission HQ in Laayoune.

On 2 October, the country celebrates the independence of 1958. The same year was adopted the national flag representing the sacrifice and labour (red), Guinean gold and African sun (yellow) as well as the vegetation of the country (green).

Merci, Guinée!
