UNIFIL Indian peacekeepers handed over a garbage sorting plant they recently helped build to local authorities in the south-eastern Lebanese village of Kfar Shouba earlier this week. It is expected to benefit about 1,000 residents living in the area.
The project – initiated after requests from local authorities – comprised construction of a sorting yard shed of approximately 400 square metres, metallic hanger with reinforced concrete channels covering an area of 200 square metres, purchase and installation of solid waste compactor, provisioning of metallic baskets and bins for garbage sorting.
The new plant enhances the local municipality’s ability to find environmental-friendly solutions to the garbage issue: to help package and sell the recyclable garbage and turn bio-degradable garbage into compost, among other things.
The project, inaugurated by India’s ambassador to Lebanon Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan on 14 March 2021, is an example of UNIFIL peacekeepers’ continued support to the host communities in maintaining the more than 14 years of stability in south Lebanon. It also complements UNIFIL efforts in reducing the mission’s environmental footprints in the communities it serves.
All preventive measures related to COVID-19 spread were followed during the 14 March event, which was also attended by UNIFIL Sector East Commander Brig. Gen. Javier Antonio Miragaya Prieto, Indian Battalion Commander Col. Narayan Singh Bhati and local mayors.
