Improving the Protection of Civilians in UN Peacekeeping Transitions

26 May 2021

The event will highlight evolving practice and emerging research on strengthening POC prior to, during, and after peacekeeping drawdown and withdrawal amidst continued threats of civilian harm. The discussion will draw on the perspectives and experiences of policymakers, practitioners, and civil society to consider the role that UNSC mandates can play in effectively contributing to the protective environment in transitions. How to avoid ‘physical security cliffs’ as part of exit strategies? How can the UN support shifts in responsibilities and resources relating to PoC in transitions? This will include the ‘whole of UN’ approach, particularly the role of UN Country Teams, Special Political Missions, and host countries. The virtual event will feature a panel discussion, followed by a Q&A.

With Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Under Secretary General for Peace Operations and Karin Landgren, Executive Director of Security Council Report and former SRSG and head of UNMIL in Liberia.

Event organized by the Permanent Missions of Ireland, the United States, Côte d’Ivoire, Indonesia and Kenya to the United Nations, together with Center for Civilians in Conflict and OHCHR.
