The objective of the Secretary-General’s Action for Peacekeeping (A4P) initiative launched on 28 March 2018, is to establish a shared understanding of the achievements and challenges of peacekeeping, as well as to renew the individual and collective commitments of Member States to strengthen peacekeeping operations on the ground. The event will serve as an opportunity to bring the international community together in pursuit of these goals. The Secretary-General will open the event and deliver a keynote address to be followed by remarks by a number of invited speakers, representing key peacekeeping stakeholders.
The Declaration of Shared Commitments on UN Peacekeeping Operations, part of this initiative, is an unprecedented effort by the Secretary-General to renew political support for UN peacekeeping operations. The Declaration spells out specific commitments that are vital to their success, for example to enhance their political impact and strengthen the protection they provide. It is based on three months of consultations with all Member States and relevant international and regional organizations and contains commitments by all the main stakeholders of peacekeeping, including Security Council members, troop, police and financial contributors to peacekeeping, host governments and regional and sub-regional organizations.
The meeting will be held on Wednesday, 25 September 2017, from 15:00 to 19:00 EST in the Trusteeship Council chamber at the United Nations in New York. The public will be able to watch it live via UN webcast at webtv.un.org.
