Current and Emerging Uniformed Capability Requirements for United Nations Peacekeeping

The aim of this paper is to communicate the UN’s uniformed capability requirements in the context of the current and emerging peacekeeping environment. In late 2018 the Secretary-General’s Action for Peacekeeping (A4P) initiative and the Declaration of Shared Commitments were endorsed by 151 Member States, demonstrating global collaboration for a set of shared commitments that will help strengthen peacekeeping, including through new and improved uniformed capabilities. This was followed by the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial in March 2019 in which 130 high-level delegations, 60 at the ministerial level, participated and 45 countries announced new pledges of specialized capabilities, including rapidly deployable units, training and capacity-building support, as well as the training and deployment of more women peacekeepers.
