MINUSMA: to be a peacekeeper is to be a barrier between conflict and peace
[Audio interview in French only]
Major Kouassi Gbezike Romeo Descar is second in command of the Ivorian battalion in Timbuktu at MINUSMA, the United Nations multidimensional integrated stabilization mission in Mali. His unit, made up of 650 men and women, strives to overcome threats on the ground.
Despite difficult times like the attack on a convoy of armored vehicles from their company based in Timbuktu, which resulted in the deaths of four Ivorian peacekeepers, for the Major, there are rewarding moments like seeing the work the blue helmets are doing to protect civilians in Mali.
For him, to be a blue helmet is the dream of any soldier whose role is to protect the people and create conditions for sustainable peace and security.
