Residents of the Makuac district in Aguok North County are celebrating the launch of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan’s construction of a new community police post.

The police facility is one of 20 Quick Impact Projects supported by the peacekeeping mission in the country. The construction costs USD 49,000 and will be done by the Community Initiative Development Agency.

Chief sultan Mathuc Gum Kuol, thanked UNMISS and urged residents to make good use of the post.

“The community is protected by the police – if there is no police there is no community. Now you put it [the police post] here and it means real independence for the community,” the sultan said.

Anastasie Nyirigira, Head of the UN mission’s Field Office in Kuajok, says the post will help enforce the rule of law in the area.

“It is a real pleasure for me to be here today to launch the construction of the police post in Makuac. Throughout the world, police are friends of the civilian populations,” Ms. Nyirigira said.

Philip Bol, the County Commissioner of Aguok North also applauded the construction of the police post and vowed to support law enforcement.

“This police post will be well located and will help us reduce crime,” Mr. Bol said, adding that durable peace can also bring other necessities such as water and food to local communities.
