Following is UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ briefing to the General Assembly meeting on the priorities of the Organization for 2024, in New York today:  Let me begin by extending my very best wishes for 2024.  I wish health and happiness for you and your families — and peace for our world. Our Organization was founded on the pursuit of peace.  Peace is our raison d’être.  Yet as I scan the landscape of today’s world, the one thing missing most dramatically is peace.  And by that, I mean peace in all its dimensions.

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres: The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by the violence that occurred over the weekend in the Abyei Administrative Area, which resulted in the tragic death of numerous civilians and attacks on the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) during which two peacekeepers lost their life in the line of duty.  The Secretary-General conveys his deepest condolences to the Government and people of Ghana and Pakistan, and to the families of the deceased civilians.

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres: The Secretary-General condemns the killing on 15 January of one Cameroonian peacekeeper from the Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) and the wounding of five others, including two seriously, by an explosive in Mbindali, in Ouham-Pendé Prefecture, north-west of Paoua.

Ninety-one Member States and three international organizations expressed their collective commitment and political support to United Nations Peacekeeping at the 2023 Ministerial, which concluded in Accra, Ghana today. At the first Peacekeeping Ministerial held in Africa, 57 Member States announced new pledges to meet current and future challenges and needs, in line with ongoing reform under Action for Peacekeeping and A4P+, key priorities to improve peacekeeping effectiveness.
