We are just days away from The Summit of The Future and the opening of the general debate. Discussions on the outcome of the Summit are in the final stretch. I will not go into the details, but I have one overriding message today:  an appeal to Member States for a spirit of compromise. Show the world what we can do, when we work together. Why is this so critical?

Following are UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ remarks to the Timor-Leste Parliament, in Dili today: I don’t know how to thank you for the distinction that has just been announced.  The only thing I can say is that from now on there is a Secretary-General of the United Nations who is both Portuguese and Timorese. And it is with pride that I assume this nationality of a heroic people and I will do everything so that when I complete my duties, the Timorese can be proud of what their citizen has done.

In visit to Lebanon, UN peacekeeping chief urges de-escalation

NAQOURA, 02 August 2024 – UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix today concluded the Lebanon leg of his trip to the Middle East, during which he strongly stressed the need for de-escalation and return to a cessation of hostilities. In meetings with senior Lebanese officials earlier in the week, Mr. Lacroix highlighted the risk of a wider conflagration and called for maximum restraint and a cessation of the ongoing intensified exchanges of fire across the Blue Line.
