Abyei, 24 February 2025 – The Under Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, has concluded a two-day visit to Abyei, reaffirming commitment to the implementation of UNISFA mandate and stability in the area.
During his visit, USG Lacroix toured both the southern and northern regions, meeting with local and international stakeholders, including the Sudan and South Sudan -appointed administrations, traditional leaders, civil society representatives, women groups, UN agencies, and UNISFA peacekeepers.
Discussions focused on UNISFA's protection efforts in Abyei, the proliferation of arms, and the escalating humanitarian crisis driven by the Sudan conflict and flooding in South Sudan. USG Lacroix committed to advocating for increased humanitarian support and stressed the importance of grassroots engagement and peacebuilding , continued dialogue between Sudan and South Sudan, and protecting Abyei from the impact of conflicts in the region.

" We remain committed to engaging on Abyei final status and securing additional support for the population. We will continue to advocate with all relevant parties to address the challenges facing the area. I urge all stakeholders to work closely with UNISFA to ensure stability and the most effective use of resources," said Mr. Lacroix.
The visit to Abyei follows similar engagements in Sudan and South Sudan, where the USG engaged with senior government and UN officials on various issues including Abyei.
