Statement attributable to the Spokesman for the Secretary-General - on the Democratic Republic of the Congo
The Secretary-General strongly condemns Monday’s attack against a temporary position of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) in Beni territory, North Kivu, by suspected members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF). The attack resulted in the killing of one peacekeeper from Malawi.
The Secretary-General expresses his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased peacekeeper, as well as to the Government and the people of Malawi.
The Secretary-General recalls that attacks against United Nations peacekeepers may constitute a war crime and calls on the Congolese authorities to investigate this incident and swiftly bring those responsible to justice.
The Secretary-General reaffirms that the United Nations, through his Special Representative in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, will continue to support the Congolese Government and people in their efforts to bring about peace and stability in the east of the country.

Déclaration attribuable au porte-parole du Secrétaire général - sur la République démocratique du Congo
Le Secrétaire général condamne fermement l'attaque perpétrée Lundi contre une position temporaire de la Mission de l'Organisation des Nations Unies pour la stabilisation en République démocratique du Congo (MONUSCO) dans le territoire de Béni, au Nord-Kivu, par des membres présumés des Forces démocratiques alliées (ADF). L'attaque a entrainé la mort d’un Casque bleu du Malawi.
Le Secrétaire général exprime ses plus sincères condoléances à la famille du Casque bleu décédé, ainsi qu'au Gouvernement et au peuple malawien et souhaite un prompt rétablissement au blessé.
Le Secrétaire général rappelle que les attaques contre les Casques bleus des Nations Unies peuvent constituer un crime de guerre et appelle les autorités congolaises à enquêter sur cet incident et à traduire rapidement les responsables en justice.
Le Secrétaire général réaffirme que les Nations Unies, par le biais de sa Représentante spéciale en République démocratique du Congo, continueront à accompagner le Gouvernement et le peuple congolais dans leurs efforts visant à instaurer la paix et la stabilité dans l'Est du pays.
