Every year on 5 December, the world observes International Volunteer Day.
This year, we are highlighting the important contributions of volunteers to the response
to COVID-19.
Around the world, volunteers have been assisting vulnerable groups, correcting misinformation, educating children, providing essential services to the elderly, and supporting front-line health workers.
As we gradually recover from the pandemic, volunteers will have a key role to play in accelerating the transition to green, inclusive and just economies.
Indeed, volunteering is the backbone of our societies.
Often working with the United Nations, volunteers build a sense of togetherness.
They strengthen social cohesion.
And they help to protect communities, especially by reaching those most at need.
That is why, on International Volunteer Day, I appeal to all governments to promote volunteering, support volunteer efforts and recognize volunteer contributions to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Volunteers deserve our heartfelt thanks.

Chaque année, le 5 décembre, le monde célèbre la Journée internationale des Volontaires.
Cette année, nous tenons à souligner l’importante contribution apportée par les volontaires à la lutte contre la COVID-19.
Partout dans le monde, des volontaires aident les groupes vulnérables, luttent contre la désinformation, éduquent les enfants, fournissent des services essentiels aux personnes âgées et apportent un soutien au personnel sanitaire de première ligne.
Pendant que nous nous relèverons progressivement de la pandémie, les volontaires auront un rôle essentiel à jouer dans l’accélération de la transition vers des économies vertes, inclusives et justes.
En effet, le volontariat est l’épine dorsale de nos sociétés.
Les volontaires, qui collaborent souvent avec l’Organisation des Nations Unies, forgent un sentiment de solidarité.
Ils renforcent la cohésion sociale.
Ils contribuent aussi à protéger les collectivités, notamment en aidant les plus démunis.
C’est pourquoi, en cette Journée internationale des Volontaires, je demande à tous les gouvernements de promouvoir le volontariat, de soutenir l’action des volontaires et de prendre acte de leur contribution à la réalisation des objectifs de développement durable.
