Consolidating stability, enhancing a culture of democratic governance and facilitating political dialogue
UNMIT—a multidimensional, integrated UN peacekeeping operation—was established by Security Council resolution 1704 of 25 August 2006 in the wake of a major political, humanitarian and security crisis which erupted in Timor-Leste in April-May 2006. Among other things, UNMIT was mandated to support the Government in “consolidating stability, enhancing a culture of democratic governance, and facilitating political dialogue among Timorese stakeholders, in their efforts to bring about a process of national reconciliation and to foster social cohesion”.
