The first United Nations Angola Verification Mission (UNAVEM I) was established by Security Council resolution 626 (1988) of 20 December 1988 at the request of the Governments of Angola and Cuba. Its task was to verify the redeployment of Cuban troops northwards and their phased and total withdrawal from the territory of Angola, in accordance with the timetable agreed between the two Governments. The withdrawal was completed by 25 May 1991 – more than one month before the scheduled date. On 6 June, the Secretary-General reported to the Council that UNAVEM I had carried out, fully and effectively, the mandate entrusted to it.
