Welcome to the United Nations

Service and sacrifice

Peacekeepers serving under the UN flag work in difficult and dangerous environments, risking their lives to protect some of the world’s most vulnerable people.

Since 1948, more than two million women and men have served as UN peacekeepers. Every day, they make a tangible difference in the lives of millions of the world’s most vulnerable people, and every day they save lives. In places like the Central African Republic and South Sudan, our peacekeepers protect civilians against violent attacks and support the delivery of crucial humanitarian assistance.

Secretary-General | 16 January 2018
I thank our troop- and police-contributing countries for their generosity, and pay tribute to all personnel who have given their lives in the line of duty.

Peacekeeping is a unique force for good, with military and police personnel from over 120 countries serving together, alongside civilian colleagues. Our peacekeepers come from diverse cultures and speak different languages, but share a common purpose: the protection of vulnerable communities and the provision of support to countries struggling to move from conflict to peace.

We ask peacekeepers and their families to make great sacrifices. They serve at great personal risk and in harsh conditions.

Tragically some make the ultimate sacrifice - over 3,500 peacekeepers have lost their lives in the cause of peace.

MINUSMA: to be a peacekeeper is to be a barrier between conflict and peace

[Audio interview in French only]

Major Kouassi Gbezike Romeo Descar is second in command of the Ivorian battalion in Timbuktu at MINUSMA, the United Nations multidimensional integrated stabilization mission in Mali. His unit, made up of 650 men and women, strives to overcome threats on the ground.

Despite difficult times like the attack on a convoy of armored vehicles from their company based in Timbuktu, which resulted in the deaths of four Ivorian peacekeepers, for the Major, there are rewarding moments like seeing the work the blue helmets are doing to protect civilians in Mali.

For him, to be a blue helmet is the dream of any soldier whose role is to protect the people and create conditions for sustainable peace and security.

Play the "big boots" of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus

When Lieutenant Colonel Jean Heric took command of what is known as Sector 4 of the United Nations peacekeeping force in Cyprus, UNFICYP, he realized he had "a big shoe to fill".

He soon learned that there were multiple layers involved in carrying out peacekeeping work in such a "broad international environment". But the Slovakian with the highest rank in the force did not start his career, with the goal of ending up leading a group of blue helmets of the United Nations. As a younger man, he was more interested in playing volleyball, he told Liz Scavidi of UN News.
