East Timor to regulate production and sale of firearms

7 February 2001 -- The East Timor Transitional Cabinet today took steps to regulate the production and trade of weapons and ammunition, the United Nations mission in the territory said today.

In a statement issued in Dili, the UN Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) said the Cabinet had endorsed a draft regulation establishing a regime to regulate the production, manufacture, possession, sale, import and export of firearms, ammunition and explosives.

The restrictive regulation intends to help ensure security in East Timor. It will now be submitted to the National Council for consideration, UNTAET said.
