PILOT LAND MAPPING EXERCISE

UNTAET's Land and Property Unit will start a pilot mapping exercise on 26 July to determine boundaries of land in Dili.

This will be the beginning of a systematic registration of land parcels in urban areas.

The pilot mapping exercise will also provide key training opportunity for UNTAET's East Timorese staff in the Land and Property Unit.

The mapping exercise will take approximately two weeks and will be carried out by teams of three people.

The project is not to determine legal ownership or right of occupancy. If the East Timorese on the land are interviewed by staff of the Land and Property Unit, it will not result in either eviction or removal of property rights.

All Land and Property Unit staff will be carrying identification during the exercise.
