UNAMIC was established by
Security Council resolution
717 (1991) of 16 October 1991, with the mandate to assist the four
Cambodian parties to maintain their ceasefire during the period prior
to the establishment and deployment of the United Nations Transitional
Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC); and to initiate mine-awareness training
of civilian populations.
By its resolution
728 (1992) of 8 January 1992, the Security Council enlarged the mandate
of UNAMIC to include a major training programme for Cambodians in mine-detection
and mine-clearance and the mine-clearing of repatriation routes, reception
centres and resettlement areas.
UNAMIC was absorbed
by UNTAC in March 1992.
