Last contingents of Indonesian army preparing to leave East Timor: UN mission.

29 October -- The United Nations mission in East Timor reported today that the Indonesian Army (TNI) forces still remaining in East Timor were now consolidated in one single location as part of their preparations to leave the territory.

A UN spokesman said the last contingents were expected to leave in the coming days. All communications and power plants that used to be under TNI control have been handed over to the multinational force (INTERFET).

Meanwhile, an interagency assessment mission led by the World Bank arrived today in Dili. The mission's task is to assess the immediate rehabilitation needs in East Timor and outline reconstruction and development programmes. Mission members met today with Xanana Gusmao, the leader of the CNRT (National Council of Timorese Resistence), and Ian Martin, Acting Special Representative of the Secretary General.

In another development, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights announced in Geneva today that special envoys from the UN Commission on Human Rights dealing with torture, extra-judicial killings and violence against women, were expected to go to East Timor next week, tentatively from 4 to 10 November.
