Indonesia urged to take action on armed groups
along East/West Timor border

25 July  -- Expressing their "profound condolences" to the family of the peacekeeper killed yesterday in East Timor, members of the United Nations Security Council today urged the Government of Indonesia to take action with regard to the armed groups operating along the border between East and West Timor.

In a statement to the press by the Council's President, Ambassador Patricia Durrant of Jamaica called on the Indonesian military to cooperate more closely with the UN Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) to end cross-border incursions from West Timor, and to disarm and disband the militias.

The Council also urged Indonesian authorities to prosecute militia members guilty of crimes, calling for the full implementation of the commitments made by the Government of Indonesia in the Memorandum of Understanding on Tactical Coordination signed on 11 April 2000.
