UN observers find mass
grave in East Timor.

20 December- United Nations Military Observers have found a mass grave in the East Timorese enclave of Oecussi, close to the border with West Timor, a UN spokesman said today in New York.

Local people say the graves contain the bodies of about 50 people from three nearby villages who were captured and shot in September by militia they were trying to flee, spokesman Fred Eckhard told a press briefing at UN Headquarters.

He said that divers from the multinational force in East Timor, INTERFET, acting on a tip from residents, had also found human remains at the bottom of a lake in Liquica, East Timor.

Meanwhile in the East Timor capital, Dili, the UN Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) announced today that two Australian forensic experts would arrive on Tuesday to set up a permanent forensic facility for the UN mission. Forensic experts from various countries will be going to East Timor for limited periods starting next month.
