Lawyers for Indonesian armed forces investigate military's role in post-referendum chaos in East Timor.

20 Jaunary -- Six Indonesian lawyers arrived today in Dili to meet with religious leaders and collect information on the Indonesian army's role during the violence that followed East Timor's independence referendum last fall.Representing top officers of the Indonesian military, the lawyers were followed around by a group of protestors carrying posters that read, "We love the Indonesian people, but we hate the actions of the Indonesian military. Justice must go forward."

Coincidentally, the lawyers arrived on the first day of operation of an East Timorese Customs Service established by the UN Mission in East Timor (UNTAET), becoming the office's first customers to receive the UN stamp on their passports.
