Indonesian investigators arrive in East Timor for probe of post-referendum violence

19 July  -- The United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) announced today that a team from the Indonesian Attorney General's Office had arrived in Dili to investigate criminal cases related to the September 1999 post-referendum violence in East Timor.

According to UNTAET, the 17-strong team would spend nine days in the territory to question witnesses and collect material evidence concerning five priority criminal cases presented by Indonesia.

After their arrival, the Indonesian group met with officials from the UNTAET Serious Crimes Unit, the Political Affairs Office and the Human Rights Office.

The questioning of witnesses, conducted by UNTAET investigation staff in the presence of observers from the Attorney General's team, will start tomorrow, the UN mission said.

In other developments, the Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers' Association (PANPA) today launched an Internet site for all print media in East Timor. The "East Timor Press Web Project" is hosted and maintained by staff and students of the School of Media and Journalism at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane, Australia.

The East Timorese journalists will be trained and supported in Web site development by UNTAET's Media Development Unit and QUT.
