EAST TIMOR PROSECUTOR GENERAL RETURNS FROM JAKARTA

The East Timor Prosecutor General Longuinhos Monteiro, who met the Indonesian Attorney General for the first time this week in Jakarta, said today in Dili that the Indonesian Government is supporting East Timor in the area of justice.

In his meetings in Indonesia, on 20 and 21 November, Monteiro met Indonesian Attorney General Mohamad Abdurrahman, Minister of Justice and Human Rights Yusril Ihza Mahendra, and officials from the Police, among others.

The Indonesian Attorney General’s Office promised to carry out serious investigations into the killings of the Nepalese United Nations Peacekeeper Devi Ram Jaisi, and the Dutch journalist Sander Thoenes, Monteiro told the reporters in a press conference today.

Private Jaisi was killed on 10 August 2000, as a result of a shotgun wound inflicted during a militia attack in Suai district, East Timor, about 30 kilometers from the border with West Timor, Indonesia. Sander Thoenes was killed on 26 September 1999 by suspected TNI-backed militia.
