MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR KILLED PEACEKEEPERS

A memorial service will be held at the Dili Cathedral tomorrow, 5 October, for the two Portuguese Peacekeepers who were killed in a helicopter accident yesterday in Same district.

Acting SRSG Parameswaran, Force Commander Boonsrang Niumpradit and the Commander of the Portuguese contingent, Col. José Ferreira, will attend the service honoring the soldiers, Private José Lopes and First Sergeant José Vitorino Fernandes.

An additional ceremony will be held later tomorrow at Dili airport before the bodies are flown to Darwin, Australia, en route back to Portugal.

The three survivors of the crash sustained only slight injuries and left the United Nations Military Hospital in Dili, were they had been under observation, this morning.

The cause of the crash is still unknown and the investigation into the tragedy is on going.
