DELEGATION HEADS FOR JAKARTA TO DISCUSS SCHOLARSHIPS
An UNTAET-CNRT delegation shall leave for Jakarta tomorrow to discuss the framework and administrative arrangements for scholarships for students who wish to resume their studies in Indonesia.
The delegation will meet the Government of Japan, the Ford Foundation and their respective implementing partners – UNDP and the International Education Foundation – and will look into the criteria for selection of scholars, stipends and budgets.
The main purpose of the meeting with the Government of Indonesia will be to discuss arrangements for the arrival of the students.
For the first year, the Government of Japan has a budget of US$950,000 and the Ford Foundation US$600,000. The monies will provide for hundreds of students.
The selection process is being done by UNTAET in coordination with Imppetu, the East Timorese students union according to four criteria. These are: candidates cannot be discriminated according to gender, religion or political ideology; they have to sign a document stating that they will return to serve their country; they have to be senior students who were previously enrolled in an university with good grades.
The delegation includes Marcial Salvatierra, UNTAET’s Head of Education, and Armindo Maia, CNRT Coordinator for Tertiary Education.
