Dili, 26 July 2000

SRSG Sergio Vieira de Mello and UNTAET’s Force Commander Lt. General Boonsrang Niumpradit will attend tomorrow’s memorial service in honor of Private Leonard William Manning, the New Zealand peacekeeper killed in Suai, East Timor, near the border with West Timor, Indonesia.

The service will take place in Motael Church, Dili, at 2 p.m.

The body of the 24-year old soldier was returned to New Zealand today at 1 p.m. Dili time, after being flowed from Darwin, Australia.

On Friday morning, a second service will be held at the chapel inside the New Zealand Battalion Headquarters in Suai, also to be attended by the Force Commander.

Yesterday, SRSG sent condolence letters to the family of Private Manning, the New Zealand Foreign Minister and the New Zealand Commander in East Timor.

The Peacekeeping operation in the area where Private Manning was killed on Monday was concluded today with nothing special to report.

The headquarters of the United Nations Civilian Police is coordinating the investigation into the homicide.

The New Zealand contingent is also doing an investigation, after which a board of inquiry will be set up.

The threat level in Suai is still assessed by the Peacekeeping Forces as medium, as it has been for the last months. According to the military, the incident was an isolated case.
