CABINET ENDORSES NATIONAL STANDARD FOR ORGANIC PRODUCTS

The Cabinet of the Transitional Government today endorsed a proposal relating to an East Timor National Standard for Organic Products, which will preserve the international recognition of East Timorese coffee as organic.

The standard will also provide the basis for certification on the other organic products by the East Timor Transitional Administration.

The Cabinet also discussed the principal findings and recommendations of the Inspector General’s review of the teacher recruitment process. The Cabinet decided that any irregularities in the process would be rectified as quickly as possible.

The number of teaching posts will be reviewed during the Budget Review to ascertain how to more adequately meet students needs. The Cabinet also decided to afford maximum transparency with regard to the Inspector General’s findings and conclusions.

The Cabinet considered a proposal to adopt a fiscal strategy to guide East Timor’s preparation for the Brussels donors conference, which will maintain aggregate budget levels for the current fiscal year. The Cabinet also agreed that an appropriate reallocation of resources in the current fiscal year will be considered as part of the forthcoming Budget Review process for submission to the National Council.

Finally, the Cabinet was briefed on the negotiations on the Timor Sea that occurred with the Australian Government last week in Dili.
