THAI GOVERNMENT TO SPONSOR EAST TIMORESE

The Government of Thailand has offered to fund the training of selected East Timorese in the areas of health and agriculture.

The selected Timorese health workers will receive training in primary health care (short term and long term training for doctors and nurses), nurse practitioners training, women health care and safe motherhood, HIV/AIDS prevention and care, medical laboratory science and management and infection diagnosis training.

In the agricultural field, the selected persons will be trained in, among other things, basic operation of agricultural equipment and tools, training in inland and coastal fishery, crop production and management – particularly rice, corn and coffee – and training and development in husbandry.

The assistance program follows a Thai fact finding mission to East Timor in late July and early August. The Department of Agriculture and Health of the East Timor Administration will now decide how many qualified East Timorese will travel to Thailand for the training and when.
