One member of the National Council of Timorese Resistance (CNRT) was killed yesterday in Maubisse, district of Ainaro, by the group of ex-militia that they were guarding.
Three other CNRT members and one ex-militia were wounded during the fight.
The nine former militias had recently been moved from Dili to Maubisse, and were being guarded by CNRT while the reconciliation process was under way.
In the reconciliation programs, former militia members do community service before they are reintegrated in their original villages. Reportedly, this group of ex-militia was doing fieldwork.
The local population captured eight of the nine ex-militia. The one who committed the murder escaped.
Civpol was called and has now the eight militia under custody in Maubisse.
The attack was at 5.30 pm.
Three of the CNRT wounded were moved by ambulance from Maubisse to Aileu yesterday night, and today they were evacuated by helicopter to Dili.
SRSG MEETINGS IN INDONESIA
The Transitional Administrator, Sergio Vieira de Mello, met President Abdurrahman Wahid of Indonesia this morning in Jakarta. The SRSG briefed the President on the meeting he and the Force Commander had yesterday, Wednesday, with the Indonesian Minister of Defense, Juwono Sudarsono, and TNI Commander in West Timor, Major General Kiki Syahnakri.
The Memorandum of Understanding on border issues was the main issue of the discussions in Kupang on Wednesday.
Today, the SRSG also met the Attorney-General Marzuki Darusman, and they followed up on the negotiations on judicial cooperation.
Tomorrow, the SRSG will meet the Indonesian Foreign Minister, Alwi Shihab. They will discuss a wide range of issues, including the Memorandum of Understanding on border issues, the judicial cooperation between UNTAET and Indonesia, the scholarships for Timorese students in Indonesian Universities, and the payment of pensions for the Timorese who used to work as civil servants for Indonesia.
The SRSG is also expected to meet Minister Sudarsono for a second time.
