UNMIL strengthens the operations of the Public Defenders and County Attorney’s Central Office through a Quick Impact Project

13 March 2018, Monrovia - UNMIL Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General (DSRSG) for Political and Rule of Law, Mr. Waldemar Vrey on behalf of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) handed over a Case Progression and tracking  database for the use of the County Attorney’s  office( Montserrado. This is a Quick Impact Project which also include  a 2 day capacity building for the staff of the County Attorney’s office in Montserrado, on the use of the database. The essence is to ensure that the staff designated to operationalize the developed databases acquire the requisite expertise in populating the databases and generating information on case progression as and when needed.

DSRSG Vrey outlined the importance and the benefits of this database to strengthen the judiciary in Liberia.

“It is access to justice, people must know that their cases are being  heard, which will build their confidence in the system,” - said DSRSG Vrey.

The Database will assist the office of the County Attorney to rapidly identify cases of pre-trial detainees charged but not indicted yet in prison custody, those  whose cases may have exceeded the statutory period for indictment, track the progression of cases   and also protect the fundamental rights of Party Litigants.
