UNIFIL-supported children’s playground opened in Abu Qamah

UNIFIL’s Indian peacekeepers, together with the UN Mission’s Civil Affairs office and the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), opened a UNIFIL-supported playground for children in Abu Qamah, south-eastern Lebanon, earlier this week.

The 16 April inauguration ceremony was attended by various dignitaries including the Mayor of Al Fardiss, Bassam Slika; the Mukhtar of Abu Qamah, Nehme Abu Rached, and LAF personnel and UNIFIL’s civil and military personnel.

In his speech, Lieutenant Colonel Amit Sharma of UNIFIL’s Indian Battalion said this project was just “a small step” for the betterment of the host communities. He extended appreciation to the people of Abu Qamah for their continued support to UNIFIL peacekeepers.

Between their core peacekeeping duties, UNIFIL peacekeepers regularly carry out various activities in support of the host communities, which – together with their operational activities – have helped keep calm in the Mission’s area of operation for nearly 13 years.
