UNIFIL Sector West delegation visits women-only soccer team

A UNIFIL delegation led by the Mission’s Sector West Commander Brigadier General Diodato Abagnara visited a women-only soccer team of south Lebanon recently as a display of encouragement for women’s participation in various spheres in the Mission’s area of operation.

The soccer team called "Stars of South Lebanon" received the UNIFIL delegation, which also included Sector West Headquarters’ gender focal point Lieutenant Monia Savioli, in the Tayr Dibbah football field in south-western Lebanon on 26 March.

The sport team brings together about 50 young athletes from the UN Mission’s area of operation in south Lebanon. The athletes play in various categories, including in the main team, under-19 team and under-14 team.

As a sign of encouragement, the UNIFIL delegation presented to the team of youngsters sport outfits and stayed with them during one of their training sessions in the soccer field.

While renewing UNIFIL’s mandate in August last year by adopting resolution 2433, UN Security Council requested UNIFIL to take fully into account gender considerations as a cross-cutting issue throughout its mandate.
