On 7 July 2019, UNAMID Joint Special Representative/Joint Chief Mediator (JSR/JCM), Jeremiah Mamabolo accompanied by the Mission’s Force Commander, Lieutenant General Leonard Ngondi and Acting Police Commissioner, Sultan  Temuri, visited Nyala, South Darfur, where they met the Acting Wali (Governor) of South Darfur, Major General Hashim Khalid,  internally displaced persons leaders from Kalma camp and handed over  various gifted materials to local institutions in South Darfur as part of the Mission’s support to local communities as UNAMID prepares for eventual exit from Darfur by June 2020.

During their meeting in Nyala, UNAMID JSR and the Acting Wali of South Darfur, Major General Hashim Khalid discussed the Mission’s operations and the security of UN premises, personnel and humanitarian workers in South Darfur. JSR Mamabolo also congratulated the Acting Wali on the agreement reached between the Transitional Military Council (TMC) and the Forces of Freedom and Change on July 5.

In his remarks, the Acting Wali (Governor) of South Darfur, Major General Hashim Khalid, commended the cooperation between UNAMID and local authorities and explained that the security situation is stable in South Darfur as a result of this coordination. Major General Khalid also thanked the national and international humanitarian actors for their support to local communities, particularly in the voluntary return, health and education areas.

Later in the day, JSR Mamabolo and his delegation met the leaders of internally displaced persons from Kalma camp. They discussed issues related to security situation and the IDPs concerns. Mr. Mamabolo urged the IDPs leaders to ensure UANMID and all humanitarian personnel serving in the Camp are protected and he urged them to refrain from engaging in looting and vandalising UN assets as was the case recently in El Geneina, west Darfur and Graida, south Darfur.

In their remarks the IDPs leaders requested UN agencies and International organizations to provide food, shelter, health and education services in all camps in Darfur, particularly during the current rainy season. They also expressed their confidence in UNAMID Peacekeepers (Military, Police and Civilian) since the establishment of the Mission. The IDPs Leaders further requested UNAMID to maintain security in all their Camps and to stay in Darfur until the IDPs return to their places of origin.
