13 December -- The head of the United Nations administration in East Timor held a series of top-level meetings today in Jakarta to discuss the territory's future relations with Indonesia, a UN spokesman said today.
Sergio Vieira de Mello, who heads the UN Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET), held talks with Indonesia's President, Abdurrahman Wahid, as well as the country's Foreign and Defence Ministers, the Minister overseeing East Timor and the Governor of the Central Bank. Their discussions focused on such topics as commerce and air links, the return of refugees and the protection of East Timorese savings accounts in Indonesian banks, according to spokesman Fred Eckhard.
On behalf of Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Mr. Vieira de Mello invited the Indonesian President to visit East Timor, the spokesman said. He added that the visit was expected to take place in the near future.
