Local companies rebuild wrecked public offices in East Timor: UN mission

16 January 2001 -- The United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) announced today it was set to receive its first rehabilitated public buildings which had been destroyed during the post-referendum violence in September 1999.

All work on the three buildings in Baucau -- the Public Prosecutor's Office, the administration building of the prison and the court -- was completed by East Timorese construction companies, UNTAET said. Official reception of the buildings is scheduled for next week.

Four major public buildings are currently under reconstruction in Dili, employing over 350 East Timorese workers, according to the UN mission. The project is expected to be completed within the next three months.

In other news, UNTAET chief Sergio Vieira de Mello met today in Dili with Portugal's Foreign Minister, Jaime Gama, to discuss the political transition process, increased Portuguese support to East Timor and the current economic situation, among other issues. They also explored possible ways to speed up the "Timorization" process with the help of additional Portuguese recruitment experts in UNTAET's Civil Service Public Employment.
