SRSG MEETS INDONESIAN FOREIGN MINISTER
A meeting with Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid will take place tomorrow morning, followed by talks with members of the new Indonesian Cabinet, including Defence Minister Moh Mahfud and Susalo Bambang Yudhoyono, Coordinating Minister for Political, Social and Security Affairs.
UNTAET’s Chief of Staff, N. Parameswaran and Peter Galbraith, Cabinet Member for Political Affairs, are also part of the team.
The UNTAET delegation also held talks today with the Indonesian Attorney General, Marzuki Darusman, regarding, among other issues, the killing of New Zealand Peacekeeper Leonard Manning on 24 July, and crimes committed in East Timor last year.
Before leaving Dili, Sergio Vieira de Mello called on pro-Indonesian militia, who had crossed into East Timor, to lay down their arms and surrender.
The UNTAET delegation returns to Dili tomorrow afternoon, 1 September.
TEN-DAY OPERATION ENDS WITH ELEVEN KNIVES CONFISCATED
A ten-day CivPol operation to reinforce routine security measures in Dili was concluded yesterday, 30 August, with eleven knives confiscated after the United Nations Civilian Police searched over 3,000 vehicles.
The operation, branded Rising Sun, involved 500 police officers, including some 30 Timorese, and was scheduled simultaneously with the CNRT congress.
Up to Wednesday noon, 30 August, 3,076 vehicles had been searched, 6,923 people had been identified, eleven knives/machetes had been confiscated, and three people temporarily detained for illegal driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.
CivPol also reported that no firearms were found and no credible threats were made.
