MINURSO’S PEACEKEEPERS: NATIONAL DAY OF THE REPUBLIC OF HUNGARY

On 20 August, MINURSO celebrated the State Foundation Day of Hungary by raising their national flag at the Mission HQ in Laayoune.

Hungary has been involved in UN peacekeeping operations since the 1990s. In 1995, Hungary deployed its first uniformed contingent to UNFICYP is Cyprus and, since then, has sent police and military personnel to a range of UN operations, emphasizing in particular the deployment of police officers and female military experts.

In MINURSO, Hungary also provided one of the mission’s Force Commanders - Major General György Száraz  who led the military component from 2002 to 2005.

The 20 August holiday commemorates the foundation of Hungary as a State in the 11th century and celebrates its “father of the Nation”, Saint Stephen. The colors of the national flag represent the strength (red), the hope (green), and the national pride and allegiance (white).

Köszönjük Magyarország!
